MLK Dinner

Join one of the nation’s largest university-sponsored events commemorating Dr. martin Luther King. Last year, more than 2,000 people attended SU’s event at the Carrier Dome.

The event which includes dinner, a speaker and awards is FREE to ESF and SU students with a meal plan. Sign up TODAY with your RA. The dinner and program begin at 5pm Sunday January 24th, 2010 at the Carrier Dome.

This years key note speaker is Gwen Ifill. Ifill is a moderator and managing editor of PBS’ “Washington Week” and senior correspondent for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.”

Save a life in Haiti

Give blood and save a Haiti earthquake survivor
Friday January 22nd from 1:30-6:30p in the Goldstein student center

Sign-up for a time slot beginning tomorrow (1/20) in the Goldstein atrium or the South Campus Residence Life Office. WALK-INS on Friday are also welcome.

The Red Cross has communicated that blood is in extreme high need due to blood being shipped to Haiti and also needed for use in the US. Do your part and give blood! A portion of the blood gathered during this drive will be sent to help earthquake survivors.

Holiday Heros

Skyhall residents- Want to be a Holiday hero?? Well here is your chance. Each year, during the holiday season, the Residence Hall Association for SU/ESF encourages ESF and SU students to “adopt” local low-income children that would otherwise receive nothing. This year the Skyhalls have been challenged to gather 56 toys for children ages 5-11. As a community let’s work to bring joy to these 56 children this season.

How can you help??
1) Go to the Skyhall main desk and ask for an envelope. Put your name (First and last) and any size monetary donation ($1 and over please) into the envelope.
2) Bring a toy valued at approximately $10-12 to the Skyhall main desk and fill out an envelope with your name (First and Last) and a brief description of the toy. If you would like to “go in on a toy together” just write all names on the envelope. Please do not purchase items valued greater than $12.

Each person who gives a monetary or toy donation will earn 5 COLOR WAR points for their floor. After the toys are gathered they will be wrapped and then donated to the children.

As a community, let’s work together this holiday season to demonstrate the power of giving!

Win a $250 gift certificate

A contest to design a sticker to be used in a promotional campaign to reduce lighting on campus is currently underway. Designs should be eye-catching and message oriented. This sticker will be placed over light switch plates in locations across campus. The contest is open to all SU & ESF students.

The first place winner will receive a $250 gift certificate to the SU Bookstore. The campus will vote to determine the best sticker.

Spring Break 2010- Make a Difference.

Alternative Spring Break 2010
Is going to Washington DC

This year the Alternative Spring Break group and twenty students will have the opportunity to attend a seven day trip to Washington DC to take part in service work with the hungry and homeless population. We will be participating in a four day volunteer camp with the Youth Services Opportunity Project. In addition to service work, there will also be opportunities to take in some of the sights of the DC Metro area. The total cost of the trip is $200 with all meals and activities included

The trip is open to all SU and ESF students living in on-campus housing. To be eligible for the Alternative Spring Break trip, students must attend one of the information sessions listed below and complete an application. The application is available online at http://orl.syr.edu/code/civicEng/ and is due via email to Jenni Greeno (jsgreeno@syr.edu) by Monday, December 14, 2009.

New floor Kudos system

New Floor Kudos- As decided upon by the RA staff
*In order for floors to receive floor kudos things done on the floor must hit one of the 4 categories. If they hit all four then they receive points for all, if they only hit one category then they receive points for that one category. The overall attitude category is an automatic 5 pts because it includes spirit, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm. For Committee choice Megan and Sheriah decide what they are giving points to and how many points you get. Depending on the programs done one or more floors may receive points per week.

The new system was created to challenge floors to go beyond movie watching and things done on the floor. We encouarge residents to think big, look beyond the floors and work to make an impact on the greater Syracuse community. We have a fantastic Skyhalls community of caring and motivated students who can make a HUGE impact.

Is this allowed in my room?

Have you ever asked yourself “I wonder if this 8” fish fillet knife, my kerosene fuel for my cook stove, and this midevil sword is allowed in my residence hall room?” The the obvious answer is NO. Other items are not as obvious. See below for items that are prohibitted in the the residence halls.

Prohibited items include:
· Candles,inscense, oil lamps, halogen lamps and multiheded lamps
· Hazardous materials (flamable liquids etc.)
· Decorations that impede door access or more than 50% of door covered
· Lofts of questionable construction
· Posters or tapestries less than 18 inches from ceiling, on ceiling or covering lights/outlets
· Pets other than fish
· Appliances including but not limited to: Coffee makers, foreman grills, rice cookers, hot pots, space heaters, toasters (All appliances for kitchens have to be purchased by the hall and kept for common use. Personal appliacnces such as these are not permitted)
· Weapons- Guns (including BB, airsoft, paintball,) , Swords (Of any kind), Knives with blades longer than 4 inches and that are not swiss army type (ie switch blades or hunting knives) OR for cooking purposes.
· Drugs or drug paraphernalia
· Alcohol or alcohol containers (if under 21)

Also-
Smoke detectors and window screens are there for your safety and the safety of our community! At no point should you be disabling detectors or removing screens from windows. Another fire safety issues is outlets that are overloaded with too many things. Use power strips with surge protectors , make sure refridgertors are plugged directly into the wall and that power strips and extention cords are not plugged into each other.

How to Save a Life!!!

Yes, the title to this post is meant to be the same as the song "How to Save a life" by Fray. Have you ever listened to the lyrics of this song? Many of us have. We all know what the song is about, yet we are still afraid to talk about it. Do you know the signs of suicide and depression? Would you know how to save the life of a friend, loved one or classmate if they were in trouble?

THIS SUNDAY October 18th 6pm in Sky 3.2 lounge ESF senior counselor Heather Rice is presenting information on depression and suicide! Come... as a result you may save a life!!!

Roasted Pumpkin seeds

Baked Pumpkin Seeds -

Preheat oven to 350°F. Separate the pumpkin seeds from the fibers. Wash, drain, and dry the seeds on paper towels. Coat 11/2 cups seeds with 1 teaspoon vegetable oil. Toss the seeds with salt (or omit salt and toss seeds with any of the suggested seasonings below), and spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake, stirring occasionally, 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Deviled Pumpkin Seeds Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon chili pepper.

Sugar and Spice Pumpkin Seeds Add 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice.

Cheesy Seeds Add 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese and 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning.

Trick or Treating for Kids-

Thursday Octocber 29th 4-6pmMany Children in the Syracuse community are not able to trick-or -treat in their neighborhoods due to safety issues. Trick or treating in the halls provides them with a safe arena in which to celebrate.

If you want to hand out candy contact Sheriah Montgomery at snmontgo@syr.edu. Candy will be provided by the hall. Help make this a great event for local children!!!!
